Do You Intentionally Plan The Theme of Your Book?

Here's a question for all you writers out there.

Do you intentionally plan the theme(s) of your book or does it occur naturally as you plot or write the story? Or a mixture of both?

After I get an idea for a story, I write a few sentences that I think might hook a reader - and from that try and figure out what themes would be possible. I know it is a good idea to have a theme in mind to keep writers on track, but don't think I have done that --yet. : )

I would say my theme emerges as I plot the story.
